ANÉCDOTA 77. LA COFRADÍA DE NUESTRA SEÑORA DE LA NOVENA: PRIMER SINDICATO DE ACTORES DE ESPAÑA.
Cuenta una leyenda[1] que en 1624 la actriz Catalina Flores había quedado tullida después de un parto del cual no pudo convalecer, puesto que su labor actoral y la de su marido, Lázaro Ramírez, que era buhonero ‒trabajos ambulantes y mal remunerados‒ no le permitieron descansar. Con lo cual, Catalina, deambulando, en el corazón del invierno[2], perdió el movimiento de sus piernas; herramientas imprescindibles para su trabajo, que tuvo que abandonar.
Así, recluida en su casa de Madrid, en la Calle León, desde su ventana vio la figura de una virgen muy venerada en la esquina de su calle y puso sus esperanzas de una milagrosa curación en dicha imagen. Le ofreció una novena y, según palabras de Casiano Pellicer[3]:
«Para obligarla más, pasó las nueve noches en la calle… Fue pues tanta la fe de esta fervorosa tullida, que el último día de su novena (que fue un lunes a 15 de junio del referido año) se sintió sana y buena con el uso libre y desembarazado de sus miembros; y agradecida corrió a la plazuela de Antón Martín a comprar unos clavos para colgar en la imagen las muletas que habían sido antes sus pies y sus manos»
Después de esto, el Vicario de Madrid, Don Diego de Vela, dio constancia de que el dicho milagro realmente se había obrado y Catalina pudo volver a actuar. Viendo que el milagro recibido por una actriz estaba probado, los Comediantes de Madrid eligieron a esta virgen como su patrona y abogada y por la novena que Catalina había rezado, la rebautizaron con el nombre de «Nuestra señora de la Novena».
Se cuenta que ese mismo año de 1624, unos herejes profanaron la imagen de Nuestra Señora de la Novena con navajas y los cómicos, ahora muy devotos de la imagen, la restauraron y, para que no sufriera más herejías por hallarse en la calle, la trasladaron a una capilla en la Iglesia de San Sebastián.
Para comprar dicha capilla, los cómicos decidieron aportar parte de sus beneficios; esto les hizo pensar que si hacían estas donaciones con periodicidad podrían tener recursos para paliar las necesidades de otros actores cuando se encontrasen enfermos, o cuando muriesen y dejasen huérfanos y viudos: a partir de ese momento se instituyeron como una cofradía que ayudara a los trabajadores de dicho gremio. Y así fue como nació la Cofradía de Nuestra Señora de la Novena: el primer Sindicato de Actores de España.
En las próximas anécdotas iré contando los avatares y entresijos de la fundación y estatutos de dicha Cofradía por la que pasaron todos los Comediantes famosos, aunque también los escritores de comedias, bailarines, músicos y todos los que se dedicaban al Mundo Teatral del Siglo de Oro Español.
Del milagro de la Virgen de la Novena a Catalina Flores se conservan unas quintillas escritas por el actor Mariano Fernández:
Dos siglos ha que, postrada
sufría con fe serena
paralítica, baldada
una actriz muy afamada
bella cual la Magdalena.
Calle de Santa María
esquina a la del León
entonces retablo había
que justamente caía
enfrente de su balcón.
Desde que el alba apuntaba
la enferma, ahogando el dolor
mirando aquel cuadro, oraba
y a la Virgen demandaba
llorando, amparo y favor.
Su gloria estaba perdida,
la escena eran sus amores
renombrada y aplaudida:
¡el Teatro era la vida
para Catalina Flores!
Que del actor, la honra y prez
en el público se fragua
y al faltarle de una vez
muere…como muere el pez
siempre que le falta el agua.
!Tres años llevo tullida¡
-dijo con fe y honda pena-
¡salvadme, Virgen querida,
yos haré toda mi vida
en cada año una novena!
Y a una iglesia os llevaré,
donde los dichos profanos
que escucháis evitaré
de mozas de mala fe
de herejes y de villanos.
La santa Virgen oyó
sus votos a no dudar
pues Catalina sanó,
¡las muletas arrojó
y al mes volvió a trabajar!
La Virgen le fue propicia
la que el llanto en dicha trueca
y la Flores, con justicia
volvió a ser gala y delicia
del Corral de la Pacheca.
Luego el retablo adquirió,
congregó a sus compañeros
los cómicos, trabajó
y en pocos años juntó
materiales y dineros.
Y en lo mejor de la villa
de Madrid pudo comprar
sitio para una capilla
que con fe pura y sencilla
vio a su vejez terminar.
!El Arte se ennobleció¡
Y la imagen santa y buena
que tal maravilla obró
desde entonces se llamó:
!la Virgen de la Novena¡
[1] Le damos a esta historia un carácter más bien legendario, puesto que, como cualquier leyenda, tiene diferentes versiones: en algunas se dice que Catalina Flores no era la tullida sino su hija Bernarda Ramírez, otras dicen que Catalina no era realmente una actriz, sino que era criada en casa de unos actores. También se dice que no vivía en la calle León sino que mendigaba por las calles de Madrid y se postraba a pedir debajo de la hornacina donde se hallaba la Virgen. En cualquier caso, la historia que consideramos que más le hace justicia a la creación de la Cofradía, es esta que ahora contamos.

ANECDOTE 77. THE BROTHERHOOD OF OUR LADY OF THE NOVENA: FIRST TRADE UNION OF ACTORS IN SPAIN.
Legend has it[1] that in 1624 the actress Catalina Flores had been crippled after a delivery from which she could not convalesce, since her acting work and that of her husband, Lázaro Ramírez, who was a street vender – an ambulant and poorly paid job – did not allow her to rest. Because of this this, Catalina, roaming the streets in the heart of winter, lost the movement of her legs, which being indispensable tools for her work, she had to abandon the acting.[2]
Thus, secluded in her house in Madrid, on Calle León, from her window she saw the figure of a very much adored virgin on the corner of her street and placed her hopes of a miraculous cure on that image. She offered her a novena and, according to the words of Casiano Pellicer[3]:
To push her more, she spent the nine nights on the streets… The faith of this fervent cripple was therefore so great that on the last day of her novena (which was a Monday on the 15th of that month) she felt healthy and good with the free use of her lower members, and gratefully ran to the square of Antón Martín to buy some nails to hang the crutches, that had been her feet and hands, below the image.”
After this, the Vicar of Madrid, Don Diego de Vela, acknowledged that the miracle had really happened, and Catalina was able to act again. Seeing that the miracle received by an actress had been recognized, the Comedians of Madrid chose this virgin as their patron saint and solicitor and, because of the novena of Catalina, they renamed her «Our Lady of the Novena».
It is said that that same year of 1624, some heretics desecrated the image of Our Lady of the Novena with knives. The comedians, now very devoted to the image, restored it and, so that it did not suffer more heresies for being in the street, they moved it to a chapel in the Church of San Sebastián.
To buy that chapel, the comedians decided that each of them would contribute part of their earnings. This made them think that, if they made these donations periodically, they could have resources to alleviate the needs of other actors when they were sick, or when they left orphans and widowers after they died. From that moment they were instituted as a brotherhood that helped the workers of that guild. And that’s how the Brotherhood of Our Virgin of the Novena was born: the first Trade Actors’ Union in Spain.
In the next anecdotes I will talk about the eventualities and the intricacies of the statutes of the foundation of this Brotherhood through which all the famous Comedians passed, but also the writers of comedies, dancers, musicians, and all those who were dedicated to the Theater World of the Spanish Golden Age.
From the miracle of the Virgin of the Novena to Catalina Flores are preserved some ‘quintillas’ written by the actor Mariano Fernández:

suffered with serene faith,
paralytic and hindered,
A very famous actress
beautiful as the Magdalene

that altarpiece was
just that close
in front of her balcony
Since dawn began
the sick woman, trying to forget the pain
looking at that picture, she prayed
and from the Virgin asked
crying, protection and kindness
Her glory was lost,
the stages were her loves
famous and applauded:
the theatre was life
for Catalina Flores!
That of the actor, the honor and fame
from the public is forged,
and missing it at once
dies… like fishes always die
when they miss water
I’ve been crippled for three years!
-she said with faith and deep sorrow-
save me, dear Virgin,
I will do to you all my life,
in each year a novena!
And to a church I will take you,
where profane words
that you heard I will avoid
of girls of bad faith,
of heretics and villains
The Holy Virgin heard,
her wishes without doubts,
then Catherine was healed
the crutches cast aside,
and a month later she returned to work!
The Virgin was favorable to her
she wept for her conversion
and Catalina, with justice
was again celebrated and the delight
in the Corral de la Pacheca
When the altarpiece acquired
she brought together her friends
her comedian coworkers
and in a few years earned
materials and money
And in the best part of the city
of Madrid could buy
site for a chapel
that with pure and simple faith
she saw her old age end
The Theatre art was glorified,
and the holy and good image
what a marvel it brought
since then, it has been called:
the Virgin of the Novena!
[1] We give this story a rather legendary character, since, like any legend, it has different versions: in some it is said that Catalina Flores was not the cripple, but her daughter Bernarda Ramírez was. Others say that Catalina was not really an actress, but that she was raised in the house of some actors. It is also said that she did not live on Calle León but begged on the streets of Madrid, and she bowed her head under the niche of the Virgin. In any case, the story that I adhere to does most justice to the creation of the Brotherhood. This is the one that I will tell.
